I always did like Langston Hughes, and discovered his poetry while I was in high school. Now, you have to know that I graduated in 1969, and in my time in Catholic middle and high school John F. Kennedy was assassinated, as was Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. While my hometown was pretty lily-white, we there at Aquinas High School were all about integration, civil rights, social justice issues and other liberal subjects. Langston Hughes really struck a chord.
Mandy. Sounds like your school was paying attention to the right stuff.
I can’t say that I know all the poetry of Mr. Hughes, but almost every time I find another poem of his, I discover a gem.

Catherine, I agree with your summary. It’s a cleanly worded reminder. Sometimes I get caught up in the day-to-day and forget my dreams. A poem like this wakes me up 🙂
