Stupid is as stupid does…
Tomorrow morning I leave for my 26th Annual Bike Trip with The Stupids.
It is now 3:12 pm.
I have not packed or thought about packing.
I have been sitting, drinking my cappuccino, and listening to an hour-long CBC interview with Margaret Atwood.
As you do.
Prior to that I walked up to the library to get a book that was ordered for me ( A Savage God by Al Alvarez). I also picked up the book that I ordered from Pulp Fiction bookstore (Laughing All the Way to the Mosque by Zarqa Nawaz). From there, I went to the studio and pushed some paint around on one of my canvases.
In short, I have been dicking around.
I’m not sure why. Even the writing of this blog is evidence of further avoidance.
It’s as though I have a writing assignment and the deadline is not yet imminent enough to catapult me into starting the process. I observe my inertia and am in awe at my inability to get motivated.
Meanwhile, my Surly Long Haul Trucker bike languishes in our storage locker.
She has been hanging there since we moved into this apartment last year. I have only been riding my city bike so Surly-Girlie hasn’t been touched in quite some time. I’m guessing she should be checked over before I load her on the rack.
I should probably go do that.
Thing is, this bike trip is more of a non-bike bike trip.
Cycling is only one of the activities. We’ve rented a home base in Nelson, BC, and we’ll be doing daytrips that may include hiking, canoeing or kayaking, yoga in the park, or who knows what…one needs different props for each activity.
One really should pack those various items.
It’s almost 4:00 pm. I think I’m starting to feel the need to get on this.
But those books are calling out to be read…maybe I’ll quickly read a chapter or two before I start?
Have fun on your annual journey with “The Stupids” my friend! You ladies are an inspiration.
Thanks Michele. Every year I am amazed at how we all manage to make time for this week together. The older we get, the more important it feels. We are very blessed to have found each other and to have made this commitment. I always feel ‘nourished’ after a week with these women 🙂
Good Morning writer cousin..fyi my daughter won the GG award this year for poetry…why do I share this? Well, not to be braggish, but to celebrate the the wonderful world of writership in our blood…
Best of travels to you…

Cousin Eva, you made me laugh out loud this morning and gave me huge hope at the same time. First, at how you quickly said you weren’t trying to be ‘braggish’. That is such a Mennonite move 🙂 We’re so careful not to have that old sin of pride thing going on! I think you should be screaming and bragging from the rooftops that your daughter won the freaking GG! That’s so fabulous.
I am looking that book up right after this and ordering my copy.
Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing this. I love how you talk about the wonderful world of writership in our blood. That makes me very hopeful and happy…
