Win a FREE ticket for Vancouver’s Ninth Annual 2013 Homes for the Holidays Event.
Five crazy-gorgeous Vancouver homes will be all fa-la-la-la-la-ed-and-all-decked-out for the Christmas Season. It will be your chance, from 11:00 a.m to 4:00 pm on November 30th and December 1st, to ogle (and ooooo!-and-ahhhh!) at some very elegant West Side homes.
But better than feeding your voyeuristic-snoopy-side (you know it’s true!), is knowing that every nickel from each $50.00 ticket will support the Kids Help Phone, Canada’s only toll-free, 24-hour, bilingual and anonymous professional phone and web counselling, referral and information service for children and youth.
This is a VERY good thing.
Even if you don’t WIN THIS CONTEST, I strongly suggest you buy some tickets. Get in the spirit, get inspired and know you’re helping a great cause.
And now for the contest. It’s simple. Write your answer in the comments below this post….Cue the little Drummer Boy (puh-puh-pa-pum!)
What one important thing makes Christmas special for you?
It can be a one-word answer or you can contribute an essay. It can be material, ethereal, corporeal or spiritual. But tell us what essential ingredient(s) makes it feel like Christmas. On November 22nd (this Friday) I will write out the names, toss them in a basket and have an impartial party (that’ll be you honey!) draw the winner.
Meanwhile, whether you win or not, you can buy more tickets online at the Home for the Holidays website or purchase them old-school-style in person at:

This has been a Vancouver public service announcement. Do not adjust your sets…
Children’s choirs. They make me cry every time.
So true Irene. I am loving this addition to this Christmas List. I am going to find myself a choir and make sure I bring lots of Kleenex. Thanks for this one. As soon as I read it I said, of course, but I would not have come up without your help:)
What one important thing makes Christmas special for me? Here’s a few:
I love the lights at Christmas, especially the big tree at English Bay.
I love how people’s hearts seem to open a little bit more.
I love CBC’s Foodbank Day, which is one of my traditions.
I love it when my clients get so much chocolate that when January comes around and it’s become clutter, I de-clutter the chocolate, and I take it to a not-for-profit that recycles it, and oh it tastes good, ahem…I mean it feels nice to help people find a new home for their chocolate clutter. 😉
Lights! Good one Elinor. The lights are such a wonderful pagan-rooted bit of brightness during this, the darkest time of the year.
And I agree, people seem a little more charitable and lovely.
And you, my dear, are obviously so Christmasy-selfless with your ongoing chocolate decluttering. What a trooper.
PS If you ever need help dealing with some of that chocolatey-goodness, you know who to call, right?
Christmas is special to me for garland of reasons, namely its meaning and spirit, oh, and the fact that on Christmas day, it’s totally cool to eat dessert for breakfast!
A garland of reasons…very nice Miz Trish. Very nice.
Thanks for the reminder about the spirit of Christmas. It makes me think of Ebenezer Scrooge discovering the true spirit of the season. I love watching classic Christmas movies that are sappy and wonderful all rolled into one big schmaltzy package…all while stuffing myself senseless with desserts. Wahoo!
Christmas is my fave time of year!! I have thought about this in past years, trying to decide why I get all warm and fuzzy at this time of year. The fuzzy may be due to the fine cocktails at the many parties!
Seriously, I simply enjoy meeting with friends and family. I love it when we can focus on the childish pleasures. Anyone making an effort to help kids in need is tops in my book. Thanks for sharing this info Colleen. I will spread the word!
Ah Jane…Fizzy, fuzzy cocktails are definitely a highlight at Christmas (and many other occasions!). I’ve been considering my answer on this too, and am really struggling to come up with a concise answer.
Perhaps if I blended all your alliterative ‘f’ answers? Fizzy, fuzzy, friends and family (although some friends are fizzier than others and currently this whole Movember thing is making some of the male species much fuzzier…oh dear. Perhaps I am in need of a fine (another ‘f’ word!) cocktail.
Thanks for spreading the word Jane. KidsHelpPhone is a very good cause and I really love pondering this kind of question with input from my fizzy friends 🙂
A very worthwhile cause! The tickets would make a nice gift for the holidays.
It would have been fun to go to the Homes for the Holidays with you Michele, but I guess you can suffer with the palm trees and the heat of Puerto Escondido instead 🙂
