We are now in the north of South Africa at the 30,000 acre Kapama Private Game Reserve in the Karula Lodge. Check out the link. It’s crazy beautiful. I am in a suite that I wish was my new home. Imagine a mid-century modern Palm Springs home mixed up with some safari eco-chic, toss in the most decadent bedding and bath accoutrements, add fabulous furniture and the aforementioned proximity to the animal kingdom and you’ll know why I might never leave.
It is a crazy experience to be sitting on my private deck overlooking the bushveld and knowing that somewhere in those trees is every animal that ever sang and danced in The Lion King. Right this minute I am watching a giraffe nibble at some tree tops. The only thing between me and his buddy is the narrow Klaserie River that is wending its way below the edge of my little platform. I swear one of them keeps staring at me.
We’ve done last night’s game drive and today’s early morning tour and have a few hours until the afternoon drive. I am not saying anything about what we’ve seen just yet. Suffice it say that I’m still wrapping my head around the 13 lions snarling and snapping their way through a recently deceased warthog.
Once I’ve sorted some of those photos and videos, I’ll put together that story. Meanwhile here’s my latest short video from our few days in Cape Town.

I’m still in Paris and could easily stay a while. 🙂
Elinor, I am definitely a long way from Paris! Really loving it here. Glad you enjoyed the little movie. I’m going to be putting together another one with all the animals we saw on our game drives.
You had me at “the 13 lions snarling and snapping their way through a recently deceased warthog.”
Nice job!!!
Doug
Hey Doug…trust me when I tell you the lions had me with that scene. It was during our night drive, so they were lit up by spotlights (which I found out does not bother them in the least; they have very different pupils than us) and we could watch the steam rising from their breath and the bloody carcass of the barely recognizable warthog. It’s definitely survival of the fittest out here. The drama is constantly unfolding.
