On the road again…
We are leaving ToonTown and heading west. There are no smoke signals, wagon trains or barrels of sugar, flour and lard to help us make the journey.
Instead, we make sure there are a few key things like cell service enroute and the inevitable Tim Hortons (see the aforementioned sugar, flour and fat necessities) that remind us, that yes, we are on a road trip.
Yesterday, while Kevin was driving, I took my pencil and my very old-school little daytimer, and added up the days I was away Somewhere Else (San Miguel de Allende, Baja California Sur, Whistler, France, Oregon, Oaxaca/Puerto Escondido, Whistler).
Then I split the remaining totals to see what nights were spent in Sechelt and how many in Vancouver. My calculations revealed: 147 nights away, 171 nights in Vancouver & 47 nights in Sechelt.
That’s roughly five months in some random beds, six months in Vancouver and just over one month in Sechelt.
They say that numbers don’t lie. But what truth do they tell?
I’m not sure what this means. Is it just the facts ma’am, just the facts?
Maybe it is what it is, nothing more than the mathematical equivalent of a big fat cigar.
But I feel like there is something else hidden within those numbers, an intangible truth that feels just beyond my knowing.
Trail markers are good to help you find your way…
But they’re even more helpful when you know where you’re going.
I love numbers and stats. What a great calculation. It inspired me to count my days away. 31 travel nights in places like Kelowna, New York, Elmira, Bowser, Bellingham, Sacramento, & Grunthal. I didn’t count the nights in Roberts Creek (10?), or house sitting in Shaughnessy (roughly 45). This year, I expect to be away at least 45 nights, in Paris, Bethune, Champagne, Belgium, England, Grunthal, Kelowna.
Hey Elinor, glad you were inspired to do your own stats.
One word of warning: I’m almost sure that mentioning Champagne and Grunthal in the same list of Future-Nights-Away just might be a Mennonite sin!
Only a month in Sechelt? It seemed more from your beautiful posts of beach and surf. I too did a year-end tally and was surprised to discover I was away from Toronto for >6 months. The fact that I was also away from my husband for 5 months in total was equally surprising. All the more so since he rated our year as a great “relationship” year. It seems absence truly does make the heart grow fonder. PS Gorgeous mountain photo! Magical indeed.
Hey Michele, I guess it’s more like a month and a half in Sechelt, but still, way less than I thought. Five months away from Javier? That’s wild, but clearly it’s working 🙂 Glad you liked the photo. Hard not to get a good shot of these mountains.
