These photos were taken during Day of the Dead, in the cemeteries near Patzcuaro, Mexico. It was a chilly night but when we entered the cemetery, we were enveloped in the warmth from the endless candles.
Every mounded grave was covered in candles, flowers and offerings. Marigolds were everywhere, a scented way for the spirits to find their way back home. Families huddled beside the graves, eating food, drinking, some kids were texting, while others played in the loose dirt that had spilled from some of the fresher mounds. Some people were already wrapped in blankets and tucked in to sleep next to their dead.
These pictures are not great but I know that even if I had taken the best photos in the world, it would never capture the reality of entering that surreal scene. I am so thankful that the families generously shared the space with us so we could witness the rituals and celebrations of Dia de los Muertos.
I am thankful too for the use of A Good Enough Day by Royal Wood.

Nicely done, Colleen.
It’s been a long while since I’ve been to MX. There will definitely be a trip sometime in 2013 as long as it takes me to the CHOCOLATE!
Thanks Doreen. Ah yes, Oaxacan drinking chocolate…love that stuff. Not to mention those chocolatey-earthy moles. Sigh.
Beautiful photos and the music is so appropriate!
Thanks Martha. Yes, I couldn’t believe it when I added the music and it lined up so well with the images. Glad you enjoyed it too.
Very evocative. What an amazing experience Day of the Dead was.
It certainly was amazing Michele. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to take that in.
