Birds and Bees Oaxaca (no sound) from Jason Leong on Vimeo.
When I’m not writing…
I stare at the bees as they disappear into the skinny bamboo stakes that make up the palapa-style roof over our dining table, or I wander the streets and take photos, come back to my cave (aka room) write – rip my hair out – write, do some Perro Bajo (Downward Dog) on the straw mat on the floor, bury my hands in my hair (again), write, or lie on the bed with my legs up the wall, wondering why I thought this was a good idea and dreaming up my next diversionary activity.
Jason Leong – one of the artists here at Arquetopia – was also looking for a diversion from his project.
As he put it, “There was so many things I knew I should be doing. Instead, I decided to just spend the time looking and filming the bees and the hummingbirds in our little courtyard.”
I’m so glad he did. He ended up creating this beautiful video, proving once again that one should never ‘should’ themselves…
Instead, follow your heart and just be(e).
Thank you Jason. This will always remind me of some of the perfect details that have made up my stay here in Oaxaca.
PS: The clarinet you hear in the video is Jason’s recording of Chris Davis, one of the directors of Arquetopia. He was practising in his room at around midnight (it’s a lovely sound that helps drown out the barking dogs and the endlessly exploding percussive fireworks).
PPS: October 22/2012. There was a subsequent issue with the video and Jason needed to remove his link. Sorry for anyone who didn’t get to see it…you’ll have to trust me that it was quite lovely!
PPPS: We’re back! Jason just sent me the new link. Same video, no sound, still cool…
I so get that. Feet on the wall, and then the bees and birds. To slow down and look is becoming my most useful remedy.
Mary, I’m convinced too. It is the forumula for sure…to slow down and just hang out.
You’re right Colleen–this is wonderful, and just what I needed to see and hear on this coldly wet and snowy day in Alaska.
Hey Mandy, it’s hard to imagine a wet and snowy day from this vantage point…but I know I’ll be looking at this little clip during the dark and dreary months ahead when I return to Vancouver…
