One bull fight in Barcelona put me off for life! The matadors kept throwing horrible picks into the bull … bloody awful! For the matador to claim victory over a poor dying bull was an atrocity. When I hear of the “Running of the Bulls,” I cheer when those idiots get gored.
It all really staggers the imagination, those bull ‘fights’ feels very Roman, with the spears, the screams for blood in the arena. Makes hockey look rather tame. What is it about round arenas, men and sticks??
Basically I don’t really know what’s all about. Boys playing (and taking a risk with a bull). Thankfully the bulls are not killed. I am an animal lover and hate anything which ridicules or bellittles a creature. Cultural values differ widely between Britain and southern Europe, involving animals and wildlife. Animal suffering is differently perceived; donkeys with split hooves and pack sores is a fact of live in rural Spain, Portugal or Greece. Bird-protection societies struggle to exist in southern countries, such as Malta, horses get killed for their meat in France. Personally I never go to corridas, safari parks, dolphinaria, zoos etc… Tha’s what I think.
Catherine, I have no idea what would posses someone to enter the ring with such a huge animal. I think it all does boil down to some sort of macho-testosterone need.
But from what I have seen around here, the animals are well cared for and the bulls seem to be bred specifically for these kind of events and I think the bulls have a better chance of coming out okay than the men in white. In my opinion, the odds of the men getting hurt are way higher than the bulls.
I agree that I would never go to a corrida and find it very hard to fathom why it is necessary to kill the bull, but I didn’t grow up with this thinking either.
The culture here is very much about horses and bulls, and though it is not anything I would involve myself in, I can certainly see that they feel a lot of pride in what they’re doing.
Having said all this? I don’t think I’ll be hanging around the arena to catch another event.
