I’m home and back in control of what I get to eat. This is a good thing as well as a not-so-good thing. The not-so-good part is that I’m also in charge of cleaning up my own mess.
There is something rather fabulous about hotels, filled with those lovely people that make my bed and pick up my towels every day, not to mention the beauty of pushing myself away from yet another ridiculously indulgent meal and having someone else clean up the dishes.
However. The good part is deciding exactly what I want to eat and how I want to feel.
So, this morning I celebrated with my usual smoothie. The picture shown above was taken just before I left for this past week of Mexican indulgences, so this morning’s smoothie was slightly different. That’s the beauty of these recipes…you can throw anything into that VitaMix blender and call it breakfast.
My usual basic recipe is to start with the toughest-to-grind ingredients;
Water or organic coconut milk (just enough to cover the blades)
Handful of raw almonds (good source or iron and protein)
One-inch cube of raw ginger (high anti-inflammatory properties)
One stick of celery
One apple
Couple of big leaves of organic kale
One or two medjool dates (pit those puppies!)
Swirl that until it looks quite Kermit-ish.
Then add a frozen or regular banana, yogurt and some blueberries or other dark-coloured fruit. The dark fruit covers up that frapped-frog colour and makes it all a tad more appetizing. If you need sweetener, toss in a drizzle of maple syrup.
Enjoy! And feel like you’re doing something good for your body…because that is exactly what you’re doing.
EEEEK – Froggee frappe?! I am drinking this concoction called Greenies… do you know it?
Ewww…Greenies doesn’t bring me the best association. Just sayin’….I can honestly say I have never seen or purchased anything called Greenies. (I have, however, heard seven-year old boys talk about greenies. This is not necessarily a good thing).
Okay, I might be the only one in the world, but that just sounds dang weird tasting! I appreciate knowing ginger is anti-inflamatory, and I think it might drown out all the other flavors. That might be a good thing. And sweetener? Oh yes, definitely would need that. Maybe a handful of chocolate chips as a chaser. . .
Ha! Jana. You really have to try it to believe it’s quite tasty. I’m not just drinking it because it’s good for me. It also truly tastes good (at least to me:) I guess all those dark berries pretty much cover everything, though the ginger still shines through with a nice hot edge.
One of my other faves has a big blob of peanut butter, yogurt, maple syrup and bananas, though still with a hunk of kale and celery in there for good measure. But you’ve got me thinking…Maybe the aforementioned peanut butter blend with the addition of chocolate.
Yes! Bring on those antioxidants!
Would be great with some mango too. Course when I think about it almost everything is made better with mango!
Michele, I believe almost everything is improved with mango. But especially with mangoes from Mexico WHILE in Mexico. The ones that finally get here are not quite the same animal.
Yum.
It really is a tasty start to the day 🙂 The ultimate is to throw in frozen sour cherries but I can no longer find them.
