I figure that’s a pretty lofty title I’ve put on this post. I don’t really have the definitive restaurant list, but more of a random list of places for breakfast and lunch.
We rent an apartment in the West End of Vancouver and our absolute go-to breakfast place, Chopain, is on nearby Davie Street. It’s a little slice of Paris. The croissants are flaky and perfect and usually still warm from the oven, and the coffee is hot and strong. It’s a great place to pick up your pastries and desserts for the dinner party later (…because surely you must be going to a dinner party some time soon?)
Closer to downtown is the other European breakfast haven of choice…Cafe Medina on Beatty. The Belgian waffles are how God meant waffles to be…they bear no resemblance to that Pop-Tartified thing called an Eggo. This is food made the real way, set in a convivial atmosphere that makes you believe you must be very very smart to be in such a funky space with everyone else.
There are other breakfast spots to be sure, but I’m skipping right over to lunch now…and I’m about to tell you about the best chicken sandwich of my entire life.
La Brasserie has a burgundy-coloured truck on the corner of Georgia & Granville, right where the escalator goes down to the Canada Line. (This is a little side business for the original La Brasserie, which is a wonderful Franco-German restaurant that is a great choice for dinner. It too, is on Davie Street).
For six bucks and a little change, you will receive rotisseried chicken smothered in a jus that is beyond intense. The whole drippy mess is piled into a soft chewy bun that is stacked to the moon with fried crispy-ish onions. Kevin had to warn me to stop moaning. I wasn’t sure whether to cry or genuflect but I swear I needed a cigarette when it was over.
Another swoon-worthy lunch stop is the big purple Feastro Bistro truck at Cordova and Thurlow. We are rather partial to this truck as it used to be just down the beach from us, here at our home in Sechelt. Unfortunately, our Sechelt council has their collective heads firmly in the sand (or perhaps otherwise indisposed?) and the purple truck had to move off the Sunshine Coast to the ultimate good fortune of all residents and visitors in Vancouver and to the loud lamentations of Sunshine Coast residents like moi.
Pick any item off the truck and you will not be disappointed. My personal fave is the crab cakes but I have had everything on that truck and it is all extremely tasty and organic and true.
And now I am catching a ferry over to Vancouver to have cocktails at Diva at The Met…because…well, why not?
What about you? What are you celebrating today?
Hi Colleen…just trying your comments again. I’ve been having trouble with the program…
Hi Joan,
Yes, there have been some issues with the comment program…just working on it. Should be fixed by Monday or so…Sorry about that.
Great post – I love Chopain, the bakers in the back are really fun to kibitz with too. This is an awesome place to get a fancy bread dragon for a potluck!
It’s so hard finding time and band, I mean, belt-width, for other food trucks. I miss Feastro so much that it’s a challenge to tear myself away the few times I’m in the city and cheat with another truck! My fave Feastro menu item is the Tuna Carpaccio. Everything about it is scrumptious, especially those little yellow fruity things with the dried leaves and stem over them… I actually begged a woman to let me have hers as she went to throw out her finished plate! Steve (chef) told me what they were called; some sort of mysterious Eastern name I promptly forgot.
On the Sunshine Coast side, fresh sockeye is in the grocery stores; the Offspring have fled for sleepover and to wait in the 6 hour line for Harry Potter at midnight (fools) so I get a luxurious salmon & salad dinner all to myself. Celebrating another day of successful paddling in the dragonboat! (Hope you’ll come out and cheer this Saturday morning for the MacKenzie Cup regatta, since you got me started 🙂
You know, I just look for your post rss email in my inbox every day; it’s my bit of zen time, time to slow down, take a deep breath, put away the worries, and enjoy a few moments with a really cool friend. Thank you thank you for writing every day!
Blessings, my dragonboating friend. I do indeed hope to be cheering you on!
Laurie…you’re the bestest. I love the regatta cheering plan…I AM rather beholden on that one.
