Wahoo…For any freelance writers out there, you’ll have your own version of this story already but for anyone who isn’t a freelancer, I’ll fill you in.
I wrote this story for Georgia Straight about a rambling walk in England’s Lake District, a long, long time ago. Well, not years ago, but Kevin and I did this walk in March of this year, and I submitted it not much later.
The Georgia Straight accepted it, we went through the editing process, and then it was supposed to run a few months ago.
However, that was exactly when that English man lost his mind and killed so many people in Cumbria in a random and horrifyingly senseless rampage. This was within days of when my story was supposed to publish.
This is where we yell, “Stop the Presses!” The Georgia Straight knew it would have been highly insensitive to run my fun little piece about the area while all that horror and sadness was going on.
So after that postponement we tried again. And then we had a few tries at it in July, but for various and sundry reasons…no go. And now – finally – here it is.
The gyrations that these poor editors have to go through to have any one story finally show up can only be imagined. It’s frustrating enough from the writing point of view.
But, I would highly recommend walking in the Lake District. It was a fun rambling hike, and this too, has been a very interesting & convoluted path to publication.
