The Pancake Man Waits
Eagles Concert in Vancouver
I realized a few things have changed as I held my iPhone virtual zippo lighter aloft, and like rest of my fellow-boomers, yelled and screamed for more of that great Eagles sound. Were the 70s really that long ago? Maybe not, because last night in downtown Vancouver, we were SO cool again. We were hip. We were happening. But where, oh where was my purple glittery eye shadow ?
Spot-on sound, clean staging, and those guys, man…they somehow made each song look like they were earnestly doing it for the first time. How do you bring all that energy and freshness to something you do night after night? I’m not sure how they pull it off, but I really appreciate that they didn’t take their fans for granted. They worked it people, worked it hard.
Altogether it was a groovin’ weekend in Vancouver, thanks to our oh-so-groovy Opus home in the heart of everything. We slid into the Elixir bar post-concert, to calm our buzzing ears and sip a cocktail. I love the edgy cachet of the Opus that somehow doesn’t bother with the pretense. It’s a fine line they walk, but they make it look easy.
Perhaps it’s their irreverent list of five make-believe personalites that guests are asked to identify with. Rooms, drinks, possible itineraries, shopping, clubs, you name it are then made to match and mirror these personas.
So for fun I got in touch with my inner-fashionista and ordered ‘Susan’s’ cocktail, even though we were sleeping in a ‘Pierre-persona’ room. Sipping that crisp drink while swirling the fresh basil leaves with my swizzle stick, I decided I embodied all the characters, even Mike, the style-conscious city boy.
Why not? After all, those old Eagle dudes are all over the age of 60 and rocking on… Surely, I can keep kicking it up too.
There is only one thing to add to this note…the pancakes. My husband is rather a reserved man. He is not a gusher of enthusiastic superlatives, so when he says that his breakfast pancakes in the Elixir were the BEST he’s ever had, he must be believed. I must also share that he has a bit of a ‘thing’ for pancakes. I’m not sure which of the Opus personas is all about pancakes, but whichever one it is, Kevin is SO that guy.
It should be noted that he told me how good they were after he was finished…oh would you look at that? No opportunity to share. I guess we’ll need to go back so I can blog this for myself, but I recommend them anyways because he mentioned it several times enroute to the ferry. One could almost say he did so ‘gushingly’. Yes. He gushingly went on about the pancakes. He’ll deny this. Don’t believe him. He gushed.
