Writers and artists have a similar reluctance to declare themselves. I think it stems from 2 things: 1. Either one can be done without formal training; 2. Either one can be stated whether one is a professional or a hobbyist.

If I am around someone who has a Master’s of Fine Art, I am embarrassed to say that I am a professional artist. If a hobbyist tells me she is an artist, she gets embarrassed when she learns I earn my living with my art.

There is fuzziness about the legitimacy of using those words. Is it my title? Is it my profession? Does it describe how I spend my free time? Am I this thing for money or for love or both?
